Investment Planning

Planning for the years ahead

A short, high-earning window has to fund a much longer life. That is the whole problem, and it is a solvable one.

The problem sport creates

Most people earn steadily across forty years. An athlete may earn the bulk of their lifetime income across ten, often with the highest-earning seasons bunched into three or four of them, and with a second career that starts from a standing start in their thirties.

That changes the question. It is less about chasing returns and more about what you do with a peak that will not repeat.

What we use

Making deliberate use of the allowances available to you each year — pensions, ISAs and other tax-efficient wrappers — and holding the rest somewhere you can actually reach it.

Access matters more here than in most plans. Money locked away until 57 is of no use to a 31-year-old funding a career change, so we look at what needs to stay reachable and what genuinely can be left alone.

When to start

“I’ve just signed my first contract.” “I’m earning good money but I don’t really know what I should be doing with it.” “It’s all just sitting in my current account.”

The years that make the most difference are the earning years, not the ones after them. Irregular income — bonuses, win money, appearance fees — is easier to put to work with a plan already in place to receive it.

How we work

We map your likely earnings across the rest of your contract and the years beyond it, agree how much needs to stay accessible, and set a level of risk you are genuinely comfortable with.

From there we use your annual allowances deliberately rather than leaving them unused, and review the plan as your contract, income and plans change.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.
