Business & Commercial Support

Supporting your ambitions
beyond sport

A second look at the opportunity in front of you, and an honest view of what it would take.

Why a second opinion helps

Athletes get approached. A friend’s start-up, a property deal, a bar, a brand that wants equity instead of a fee. Some of it is good. A lot of it arrives because someone knows you have money and a public profile.

The hard part is rarely the idea. It is working out what it would really cost, what happens if it does not work, and whether it fits the rest of your plan.

What we do, and what we refer

What we do directly: look at what an opportunity would mean for your wider financial position — what you would be committing, where it would come from, what it does to your tax position and your plans, and what the downside looks like if it fails.

What we refer out: company formation and structure, shareholder agreements, commercial contracts, due diligence on the business itself, and accounting. We make the introduction to specialists we know and stay involved so the advice joins up, but we do not provide legal or accountancy advice ourselves.

When to call

“I’ve been offered an investment opportunity.” “A mate wants me to come in on a business.” “I’ve been asked to take equity instead of a fee.” “I want to start something of my own for after I retire.”

The useful moment is before you commit, not after. A conversation costs nothing and is considerably cheaper than the alternative.

How we work

We go through the opportunity with you properly — the numbers, the commitment, the realistic downside — and say plainly whether it stacks up against what else you could do with the money.

Where it needs specialist input we bring in the right people and stay in the room, so you are not left to join up four sets of advice on your own. Franklyn also runs Elite Ventures for athletes going further down this route.
